Da wir uns beim Gig im Stuttgarter JuHa West verpasst haben, war Andrew so nett, meine Fragen schriftlich zu beantworten. Hier lest ihr, was dabei rausgekommen ist, viel Spaß!
You describe SIGHTS AND SOUNDS as an exciting and uniting experience - the members are
strewn across Canada and the album took a while to get finished. WHAT IS IT
LIKE TO HAVE A SONG SITTING ON A SHELF UNTIL IT CAN FINALLY BE RECORDED?
I don't really look at it as a song sitting on a shelf.
Rather, I see it as a work in progress. Even though a song structure,
lyrics, leads, etc are nailed down... there is still so much detail
left to go into the songs, especially while preparing for recording.
And to be honest, we usually are writing right up until we go in the
studio. Sometimes we don't allow ourselves a ton of time.
You live out of a storage unit and MONOLITH is a record for travelers and
travelling: DO YOU WANT TO TAKE A PUASE FROM LIFE ON THE ROAD ANYTIME SOON
OR RATHER PRODUCE MORE TRAVELLING MUSIC?
At this point, I'm interested in staying on the road. Especially
with Sights & Sounds having an album out now. I try to book the tours
between my bands back to back so there isn't much down time. A
constant task in my life is try to schedule between the bands, tours,
recording, etc. and it doesn't really leave too much room or time for
much else. I have done some production work. I was in Portugal
producing a record for a hardcore band there called Devil In Me. Its
still in the process of getting mixed and what not. I do what I can to
keep things fresh and interesting. I just finished a CBK tour
yesterday. Now Im on a bus from Seattle to Vancouver and about to
start a Sights tour in a couple days. Then after xmas we'll be writing
a new CBK album.
Neufeld sounds German to my ears, you are touring here now and were on past
tours with CK: DO YOU FEEL ANY KIND OF SPECIAL RELATION TO GERMANY?
I sure do. I have German and Dutch roots. My grandparents were
Mennonite and went through a lot during the 2nd world war. My relation
to Germany though is more personal. I have been coming over there for
the last 8 years or so somewhat regularly and I have made some good
friends. I hope I can always come back, and spend more time there.
Hopefully more free time!
The output of yours is not only through hardcore, now you are playing with
your brother: WOULD YOU SAY S&S BALANCES YOU OUT (MUSICALLY, SPIRITUALLY,
etc.)?
I dont think I feel too much balance. I think Im getting nuttier as
Im getting older. What I do get is diversity. Sometimes it feels like
balance, but sometimes it feels like my head is spinning. Though I
feel Im a young soul and Im hungry for the as much as I can get out of
this life. I love playing music with my brother. He is probably the
best I've played with and he is a blast to be around. We help keep
each other sane sometimes.
The album is like a monument: HOW WAS THE PRESENTATION SO FAR?
I'm happy so far with the presentation. Though I think there is so much more we could do. We are
still a very young band but we have really massive ideas. Some are
harder to deliver under some time/ financial restraints when it comes
down to it.
We try to keep our lives show straight and to the point. Not really
breaking too much but keeping the vibe and hopefully giving the mood
that we are trying to get across. As the band progresses and grows,
the presentation will too. Im really excited for the future of this
band.
IS IT IN ANY KIND ANNOYING TO ANSWER CK-QUESTIONS WHEN TORUING WITH S&S?
No, I'm fine with it, especially since a lot of the time people know
me from seeing me with CBK first or heard of Sights through CBK. Its
nice to have people give a fuck about your music.
ANY DIFFERENCES CROWD-WISE? OR MOSTLY CK-FANS?
On the reaction side of things, its very different. I would judge a
good show very differenty between an S&S show and a CBK gig. Where
with CBK people would be screaming, jumping, flailing, and moshing...
an S&S show should have people watching, and more taking it it. Maybe
having some drinks, maybe a few cheers. More chilled out vibe yknow?
You are always on tour and eat lots of catering: ARE YOU GUYS
VEGANS/VEGETARIANS/sXe?
In S&S, Im afraid to say NO. Not enough conviction.
THE CURRENT TOP 5 ALBUMS YOU ARE LISTENING TO?
Our Broken Garden - When Your Blackening Shows
Mew - No More Stories...
Mastodon - Crack The Skye
Trapped Under Ice - Secrets Of The World
Buraka Som Sistema - Black Diamond
LAST LIVE SHOW YOU HAVE ATTENDED AS SPECTATOR?
Hmm the last show I went to was Cancer Bats/ Billy Talent in London, England.

Hmm the last show I went to was Cancer Bats/ Billy Talent in London, England.
The CK stems from the headline about Mario Limieux: WHERE DID THE BANDNAME
COME FROM?
I think the real place we got the Sight & Sounds name is, there is
this venue in Long Island, New York. I forget the name of it but it
was "Something something Lights and Sounds". I thought.... why not
"Sights & Sounds" for a band name one day. Man, names are so hard to
think up for projects and albums. Im pretty happy with ours. We just
gotta hold on to it before another band takes it or something similar.
I was in the bathroom in Portland the other day taking a piss and
looked up over the urinal to see a sticker that said "Sights VS
Sounds." I thought "great"!
THANKS KINDLY FOR THE INTERVIEW.
Thank you!
